Tilak High School aims to defy all odds to win the main prize during at the Fiji Secondary Schools Hockey Association tournament at Natabua, Lautoka from today.
The school will be fielding teams in the Westmere Cup (girls 11s), Melaia Sandys and Noal Cup (girls and boys 7s) after convincingly winning the Lautoka/Nadi district tournament.
Team manageress Elenoa Tamani said all three school teams are ready for the two-day meet.
“The girls’ team are the western champion for both the 11s and 7s,”Tamani said.
The schools from Cawaci, and Suva teams will be a threat.
“We are the best team in Lautoka, and the only teams likely to be threat to us would be St John’s and Suva Grammar in the boys with St Joseph’s in the girls,” she said.
Former students had been assisting the teams’ preparation.
“We have been training on weekdays, with two coaches Iris Peters and Mafi Tupou helping the team.”
The last time the school tasted victory was in early 2000 where it won at the Laucala turf just after the opening of the Laucala synthetic turf.
“The girls have taken part in the FSSHA tournament for the sixth year in a row. The last time the boys and girls won together was just after the Pacific Games at the hockey turf,” Tamani said. Some formidable schools who have returned to the fold after a few years are Laucala Bay Secondary, Cathedral, Gospel High and Delana Methodist appearing for the first time since 1990.

Tilak High School Hockey

Tilak High School’s Hockey team has been in existence since 1955 when the Lautoka Secondary school was first established in colonial Fiji. The school  has fielded senior boys hockey team in coveted national secondary school hockey tournaments such as Bhasin Cup and Noel 7  A side Cup since 1955 and has won both these trophies numerous times. Tilak Hockey team also won the Lees North West trophy in the Lautoka Secondary Schools Hockey Championship  in 1984 and 1985 .  It was era of 1980s when Tilak won the Bhasin Cup in 1981 and it reached the Bhasin and Noel cup finals in 1987. This was a  golden period when Lautoka’s secondary schools such as Ba Provincial Secondary, Natabua High School, St Thomas High and Tilak High dominated national secondary schools hockey. These  students played with seniors in Lautoka district’s mens hockey and Lautoka hockey clubs that dominated Fiji hockey competitions.   Historically some of the past brilliant  Tilak Hockey players were Amanullah Khan,Habibullah Khan and Jahangir Khan who were selected for Fiji in 1964 and these Khan brothers played for Namoli Sports Hockey Club which was 70% Tilak students and later the Khan brothers played for Lautoka Indian Mens hockey IX against Auckland IX at Churchill Park in 1966 defeating the visitors 2-1.

In the 1980s it was  brothers Ernest Coffin and Hanie Coffin from Tilak High who played for Fiji Mens national Hockey in the Oceania hockey Tournament in New Zealand in 1986. There were others like Vijay Mani, Riaz Khan and Aziz Khan played for Fiji President’s IX and selected for Fiji under-21  in 1986.

Tilak High Ladies hockey team also takes part in the Westmere Hockey tournament and has fielded competitive ladies team since 1986. Tilak Hockey Old Boys (THOBS) (Includes the girls) is an international social network of ex-players/students/professionals who provide support and funding for hockey to improve playing facilities and funding for hockey at Tilak High. Since 1955 Tilak High School is proud to have produced outstanding hockey talent for Lautoka hockey clubs, district , national Mens and Womens hockey teams and this rich tradition continues to this present day.
